A look through the lens: Vacation course in digital photography during the semester break

During the semester break, 21 students from Hof University of Applied Sciences took the opportunity to improve their photography skills. The one-week vacation course “Digital Photography” took place under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Heym and brought together participants from various courses such as Business and Organizational Sociology (WOS), Business Administration (BWL), Media Informatics (MI), Textile Design (TD), International Management (IM), Applied Informatics (AI), General Management (GMG), International Project Management (IPM) and Marketing Management (MM).

The course focused on the basics of digital photography and optics. Participants were also given practical insights into various photographic genres such as light painting, portrait, landscape, architecture and product photography. Macro photography and HDR shots were also covered. Special emphasis was placed on photographing with maximum image sharpness and the use of flash. The program was supplemented by an introduction to image editing with Adobe Lightroom Classic.

Our aim was to give students an understanding of both the technical and creative aspects of photography. The combination of theory and practice ensures that the participants can develop their own photographic signature.”

For practical exercises, the students went on excursions to the Hof Botanical Gardens and the city area to find motifs for their projects. The resulting images were then analyzed and discussed together.

The vacation course offered the students an ideal opportunity to further their education outside of their regular studies and to express their creativity at the same time. In view of the positive response, the course is to be repeated in future semester breaks.
