A doctoral degree is an important step in an academic career—and raises many questions: Is a dissertation the right path for me? What topics are suitable? How do I find a suitable advisor? And what career opportunities does a doctoral degree open up?

With the “Next Step: Doctorate” PhD workshop, Hof University offers those interested in pursuing a doctorate the opportunity to explore these questions and clarify their own goals. Over the course of two afternoons and evenings, the focus will be on exchanging ideas with other interested participants, discussing with experienced researchers, and establishing initial contacts with potential advisors.

The goal is not merely to provide information about the formal requirements and procedures for a doctoral program. Participants are also encouraged to explore the personal opportunities available to them and to identify the next logical steps toward an academic career.

An Academic Career with Practical Relevance

A doctoral degree opens up new opportunities—both within academia and for further professional development in the business world. Especially at a university of applied sciences like Hof University of Applied Sciences, the connection between research and practice plays an important role.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietmar Wolff, Vice President for Teaching at Hof University of Applied Sciences, emphasizes the importance of a continuous academic career path from the bachelor’s degree through the master’s degree to the doctoral degree:

“Applied research can always help generate innovative solutions that are highly relevant to real-world practice.  In addition, a doctoral degree can, of course, improve career prospects. Our workshop is therefore not only aimed at people who are already pursuing a specific doctoral plan. Even those who first want to explore whether an academic career fits their profile and personal goals can benefit from the two-day event.”

Two Days for New Perspectives and Concrete Next Steps

The workshop will take place on November 16 and 18, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day, at Hof University of Applied Sciences. In addition to academic insights and discussions, the program offers opportunities to get to know one another personally and to network. A get-together with snacks and drinks rounds out the event.

The event will be held in German and English. There are 15 spots available for each language version. Participation, including refreshments, is free of charge; participants must cover any travel expenses themselves. It is generally possible to attend just one of the two days. However, priority will be given to applicants who can attend both dates.

Apply Now: What Motivates You to Pursue a Ph.D.?

The application period runs through October 31, 2026. Ideally, interested candidates have already earned a master’s degree or an equivalent qualification, or are currently pursuing a master’s degree. There are no fixed admission requirements.

In addition to personal information and details about your academic or professional background, a short statement of purpose is required. In this statement, applicants should explain why they wish to pursue a Ph.D. and what inspires them about an academic career. Information about existing Ph.D. research proposals may also be included.

Hof University of Applied Sciences will notify applicants of the selection decision by November 4.

Anyone who wants to further develop their own academic path, build connections, and turn an initial idea into a concrete plan should take advantage of this opportunity.
