The History of Modern Europe: Guest Lecture on Robert Schuman

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Prof. Dr. Christoph Ann, a legal scholar and professor of intellectual property law at the Technical University of Munich, will give a guest lecture from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Auditorium B023 at Hof University of Applied Sciences on Robert Schuman (1886–1963), one of the most important founding fathers of the European Union. The title is “Robert Schuman – Europe as a Life’s Work.”

Schuman was born in Lorraine, which at the time belonged to the German Reich, and embodies the German-French dual identity in a unique way. After World War II, he served as French Foreign Minister and initiated European unification with the so-called Schuman Declaration of 1950. The resulting European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) is considered the precursor to today’s European Union.

“Robert Schuman stands, like few other figures, for the overcoming of national divisions and the idea of a united Europe,” said Prof. Dr. Christoph Ann. The event is open to the public and is aimed at anyone interested.
