Digital transformation: Hof University of Applied Sciences and Bayreuth University launch Digitization College

With the creation of interdisciplinary digitization colleges at universities throughout Bavaria, students are to be made fit for the digital transformation. Hof University of Applied Sciences and the University of Bayreuth are now establishing a joint digitization college on the topic of “Digital Methods” as of September 1, 2022, which will offer a broad range of courses for students from all faculties. It is one of 13 new digitization colleges starting simultaneously at 17 Bavarian universities and colleges. The college in Bayreuth and Hof will receive more than €700,000 in funding from the Bavarian Ministry of Science over the next four years. The funding is part of the new junior researcher support programs coordinated and supervised by the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt), an institute of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW).

In the Digitization College “Digital Methods”, the chairs of Polymer Materials and Business Informatics & Data Science at the University of Bayreuth work closely with the Institute for Information Systems (iisys) at Hof University of Applied Sciences.

The courses of the new college, which also involves associated partners from other faculties and institutes, are aimed at bachelor’s and master’s students from all disciplines. They familiarize students with fundamental aspects of digitization and its interactions with society. Interdisciplinary teams develop innovative approaches to current issues from the natural, economic and social sciences. The course program is currently being developed, and the first courses are expected to be offered from November 2022.

The complexity of the modern world requires solutions that can best be developed in interdisciplinary teams, and this is also what students should learn and experience in the joint courses. That’s why I’m very pleased that our application has been considered and look forward to interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues from the materials sciences and business informatics departments at the University of Bayreuth and in-house colleagues.”
