HofUniversity App: New Android App for Students at Hof University of Applied Sciences

The previous Android university app was launched back in 2016. Since then, it has supported students as a daily companion in student life. The main functions are a (personal) timetable, the Mensa meal plan and a link to some university services.

However, the app has become outdated both technically and functionally and has recently essentially only undergone minor bug fixes, but no major functional enhancements. Therefore, Prof. Dr. Walter Kern, who teaches in the area of mobile computing at Hof University of Applied Sciences, among other things, has designed and implemented a completely new app.

The new HofUniversity app is implemented on the basis of Hof.js light and Hof.js android, university-owned technologies for modern app and web development on which Prof. Dr. Walter Kern conducts research. The range of functions is significantly more powerful than the previous Android app, with support for the following features, among others:

  • Personalizable timetable (free compilation of a timetable based on lectures of different semesters and courses to support the individual way through the studies)
  • Information about timetable changes
  • News from the university website and the university magazine Campuls
  • Overview of university events
  • Compilation of all semester dates
  • Retrieval of module handbook, lecturer and room information for a lecture
  • Search for facilities, persons, rooms
  • Menu
  • Easy access to university services like Moodle
  • Calendar synchronization (experimental, currently not working on all devices)

The new Android university app is multilingual and also offers a dark mode. One automatically receives notifications about new university news, campulsnews, events, timetable changes, etc. Various other features are also in the works.

You can get the new app at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.hofuniversity.hofuniversityapp2.
