“Shaping instead of complaining!” – Chancellor Ute Coenen on the university elections

From 02.07.2025 to 08.07.2025, university elections will once again be held online at Hof University of Applied Sciences. Representatives will be elected to the Senate, the Faculty Councils and the Graduate School’s Faculty Council. In an interview with “campuls-digital“, Chancellor and Head of Elections Ute Coenen explains why this is important and why you should get involved.

Ms. Coenen, why are university elections more than just a compulsory date in the calendar?

“University elections are a central element of democracy in practice at Hof University of Applied Sciences. Those who vote – or ideally even stand for election themselves – take responsibility for the further development of our academic life. It’s not just about formalities, but about very specific decisions that influence studies, the direction of the university and everyday life on campus. If you want to help shape things, you can and should get involved.”

What specific issues can you help shape as an elected representative?

“There’s a whole lot! For example, the committees discuss new degree programs, examination regulations or the university’s development strategy. You can also provide impetus on topics such as sustainability, internationalization or improvements in the organization of studies. It is a good opportunity for employees from all groups at the university to contribute their own perspective to strategic processes. This applies equally to students.”

Who exactly is the call for candidates aimed at?

“All members of the university – students, professors, academic staff and administrative employees. The voices from within the university are particularly important. We often see a great deal of commitment there, which is very valuable in the committees. And by getting involved, students can ensure that their concerns are not only heard, but also represented.”

Many shy away from running for office because they are afraid of the effort involved…

“Of course, committee work takes time. But the effort is usually limited – and you get a lot in return: insights into internal university processes, new contacts, valuable experience for your own CV – and the good feeling of having made a difference. If you don’t want to run on your own, you can also stand as a list together with others.”

How can voter turnout be improved – especially among students?

“The most important thing is that as many students as possible are prepared to stand as candidates and show what they stand for! That way, voters have a real choice. We also need to make it clear that the more support the elected representatives on the committees have among students, the stronger they are, so every vote counts.”

When can the results be expected?

“That’s naturally quick. The official final result should be announced as early as 09.07.2025.”

Your final appeal?

“Take an active part in shaping your university – whether by voting in the election or by standing as a candidate. Getting involved makes the university better. Democracy thrives on participation – at Hof University of Applied Sciences too.”
