A new round of city lectures at Hof University of Applied Sciences is starting: the successful format, which began in Hof in the student café, is now touring another university location, the Selb learning center. The series, which starts on September 30, will initially focus on the question: “Why we always have to reach for our cell phones: A look at online psychology” with Professor Viktoria Bachmann.
We all know it: on average, we look at our cell phones around 80 times a day. Why are we so magically captivated by a small machine? Why do we spend so much time online on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and the like? And what exactly is behind the so-called Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), i.e. the fear of missing out on something exciting? In her lecture, Professor Viktoria Bachmann will take a closer look at this and, above all, the question of how our thoughts and behaviors are influenced.
The psychology of the online world: social media & co.
“On this evening, you will learn more about the neuro-psychology behind the wide variety of social media and other online offerings,” says the business psychologist. She will also explore what harmless games such as Candy Crush have to do with addiction and what strategies help to develop healthy online habits and maintain a digital balance.
University wants to reach out to the public
“In this second round, we want to reach out to interested members of the public again, because it worked really well the first time,” says Professor Valentin Plenk, who is responsible for the event as Vice President Research and Development: “We had a really large number of interested guests aged 8-80 and were overbooked three times during the three previous events!” His tip is to register as early as possible. With this event, Hof University of Applied Sciences shows that a serious, scientific discourse does not necessarily have to be boring and incomprehensible.
After Hof now city lecture in Selb
For this reason, Hof University of Applied Sciences is now hosting its second “City Lecture Series”, which is explicitly aimed at the citizens of Selb and the surrounding districts. The venue is the Spektrum in Selb, Poststraße 5, which, following extensive renovation work, is now a modern cultural venue for a wide variety of events. The first event will take place on Monday, September 30, at 5.30-7.30 pm.
A maximum of 66 people can take part; the order of registration applies. The event is free of charge, drinks and snacks are on a self-pay basis.
