6 myths about studying abroad – and what’s really behind them…

A semester abroad – for many students this sounds exciting, but also somehow daunting. Too expensive? Too time-consuming? And is it really worth it? We dispel the most common myths and show why a semester abroad is not only feasible, but also a real enrichment.

Friendships, new perspectives and unforgettable experiences: Studying abroad combines cultural exchange with academic advancement; Image: adobestock.com;

Myth 1: A semester abroad is unaffordable

Wrong! In most cases, a semester abroad is actually surprisingly inexpensive. Thanks to cooperation agreements between our university and numerous partner universities, there are usually no tuition fees. For destinations within Europe, there is also Erasmus funding, which provides a monthly grant. Various scholarship programs are also available outside Europe – and last but not least, there is the possibility of receiving BAföG abroad. The surprising thing: Even those who do not receive BAföG in Germany can receive BAföG abroad, as different assessment limits apply here. Financial reasons should therefore not prevent anyone from studying abroad.

Myth 2: The organizational effort is huge

Don’t worry – you don’t have to be a bureaucracy pro! The first step in applying for a semester abroad is quick and easy and no documents need to be submitted. The entire application process is largely online and is comprehensively supported by the International Office. The local partner universities also provide support with the organization – from course selection to finding accommodation. With the right support, going abroad is far less complicated than many people think.

Myth 3: A semester abroad won’t benefit me personally

On the contrary: the benefits are manifold – both personally and professionally. You improve your foreign language skills, get to know new cultures, make international contacts and develop yourself further – quite automatically, because you work independently in a new environment. A semester abroad also makes an impression on your CV: intercultural competence, flexibility, initiative and often even initial international work experience are soft skills that employers value. And last but not least: You grow beyond yourself.

Myth 4: There is no suitable university for my degree program anyway

This myth is also persistent – but has long been disproved. Our university has numerous partner universities worldwide, in almost all subject areas. In the International Office’s online database, you can filter specifically for degree programs and universities that match your subject area. Not only will you find suitable offers, but you can also choose the university that best matches your interests.

Myth 5: I lose time and have to add an extra semester

A semester abroad does not automatically mean an extension of your study time. If you find a suitable university and take courses there that fit in with your study plan, these can be credited to you in Hof. This means you can continue studying – but with a view of the sea, the mountains or a skyline. With good planning and coordination with your faculty, you can continue your studies seamlessly – without losing any time.

Myth 6: I absolutely have to get credit for something abroad

No, this is not mandatory. The only requirement is that you take at least 20 ECTS (Bachelor’s) or 15 ECTS (Master’s) at the partner university. It is up to you which modules you choose. The semester abroad can therefore also be used to deepen or broaden your subject knowledge – or simply to get a taste of other disciplines. Flexibility is the keyword here.

Conclusion: A semester abroad is worthwhile – and easier than you think

The hurdles are much smaller than they seem at first glance. With good support, the right information and a little courage, your semester abroad will not only be a highlight of your studies, but also a personal milestone.

Curious? Then drop by the International Office – they will give you all the information you need to take the first step.
