The non-profit association “Moodle at Universities” was founded in a joint video conference on July 22, 2021 by 29 German universities. Dr. Heiko Schoberth, head of the department “IT & Projects” at Hof University of Applied Sciences, was elected to the board. The association, based in Berlin, is the contact and multiplier for the open source learning management system Moodle in the German higher education sector
The joint work in the association is intended to strengthen the open-source idea behind the Moodle software. In software, open source means sharing source code, but also sharing experiences and values, as well as exchange within a community. Moodle is used at around 180 German universities and is thus available to over 1.5 million students. During the Corona crisis, Moodle was one of the tools used to not only maintain, but also expand the number of students.
Even without a pandemic, such digital platforms offer many opportunities: Study content can be accessed independently of time and place in various digital formats, students communicate with each other and with teachers. They work on interactive learning activities, and exams are supported digitally.
The association is a contact and multiplier, strengthens networking and knowledge transfer and coordinates Moodle developments for university needs
