Clean chemistry labs for a green future – GreenTech University Hof is upgrading

In the laboratories at Hof University of Applied Sciences, the lecture-free period was used to start a major clean-up process. A comprehensive disposal campaign for hazardous substances was carried out by an expert service provider, with the various chemical waste materials being carefully sorted and prepared for destruction.

But there is more behind this than just a simple cleaning operation: the university wants to make its laboratories fit for the future and at the same time make a contribution to personal and environmental protection in teaching and research.

An important step in this direction was the introduction of a new digital chemicals management system.”

Nathalie Koch, Safety Officer at Hof University of Applied Sciences

Such a system enables researchers and teaching staff to handle chemicals more safely and efficiently. All information on the substances used, from storage to disposal, is recorded and managed centrally. This ensures that no hazardous substances remain in the laboratory for an unnecessarily long time, are used by unfamiliar people and that all necessary safety measures are taken.

In the textile finishing laboratories at the Münchberg site, the topic of “chemicals and hazardous substance management” is already part of the teaching. Professor Dr. Anett Matthäi emphasizes how important it is for a global and chemical-intensive industry to teach students about the connection between the use of chemicals and environmental impact.

Students should not be afraid of chemicals, they should learn how to use them respectfully and safely and be able to decide when substitution is necessary.”

Prof. Dr. Anett Matthäi

Oliver Stark, scientist and internal environmental auditor at the university:

‘The knowledgeable handling of chemicals is a basic prerequisite for sustainable research and teaching in the chemistry laboratories.”

Oliver Stark, environmental auditor

The university wants to assume its responsibility for the environment and at the same time develop innovative solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

University members can thus work in a safe and sustainable environment and at the same time contribute to the success of the university. With this step, the university is underlining its commitment to a green future – right at the heart of the chemistry laboratories at the Münchberg and Hof campuses.
