City lecture: Who controls our digital lives? – Paths to digital sovereignty

Many of us use cloud services from companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, or Google on a daily basis—often without even realizing it. Whether storing photos, shopping online, or communicating, US tech giants shape our everyday digital lives. In Germany, almost everyone already works with software from the US—and we are also deeply integrated into these systems in our private lives.

Hof University is addressing this topic in its 12th city lecture: “Digital Sovereignty.” The focus is on the question: What does this term mean, and is complete digital sovereignty even achievable?

The speaker is Professor Dr. Florian Adamsky from Hof University of Applied Sciences, who will present reasons and strategies for minimizing digital dependencies in our private lives, thereby making our everyday lives more digitally secure, self-determined, and independent. “This is a topic that has come back into focus since the latest geopolitical developments,” says the university professor, who also conducts research at the Institute for Information Systems (iisys) in addition to his teaching. The IT security expert, who earned his doctorate at City University London, has been teaching at Hof University since 2019.

Student café “Zur Auszeit” is a popular location

The popular event format at Hof University of Applied Sciences will return to Hof city center on Wednesday, April 29, during the summer semester – more precisely, to the student café “Zur Auszeit,” Karolinenstr. 30, 95028 Hof. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free of charge. Drinks and snacks are available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

City lecture aimed at the general public

Hof University of Applied Sciences has a mission to engage with society as part of its “third mission.” This third pillar stands alongside the other two of teaching and research and aims to bring the university’s knowledge to the region.

Save the date: “Knowledge, Thinking, Speaking”

You can also look forward to the next city lecture: Hof University cordially invites you to “Knowledge, Thinking, Talking. How to discover the truth ‘between the lines'”. It will take place on Wednesday, June 10, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The speaker is Prof. Carsten Stark. The event is aimed explicitly at the citizens of the city and the surrounding districts. The venue is once again the student café “Zur Auszeit.”

Registration is required and can be done now at this link.
