To create comprehensive and time-efficient public transport services in rural areas, demand-responsive services are increasingly being set up. As these services only function efficiently in very limited areas, it is necessary to link them with an adapted regular service. The planning of such services is very complex due to the large number of different needs and routes and can hardly be solved without the help of suitable digital tools. The area covered by the “OptiModal” project is limited to the district of Hof, but will be transferable to other districts. The project runs from 01.07.2024 to 30.06.2027.
“OptiModal” is being implemented with the partners TU Munich, Fluxguide Ausstellungssysteme GmbH, Plan4Better GmbH, Match Rider GmbH and the district of Hof.
OptiModal uses a data-driven approach to optimize public transport in rural regions and thus demonstrates an attractive field of application that has an indirect impact on reducing the environmental impact of traffic. Data on existing transport services in the region can be used from the context of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
The “OptiModal” project is being funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport with around 1.6 million euros as part of the mFUND innovation initiative.

The Institute for Information Systems is the central research facility for computer science at Hof University of Applied Sciences. The institute brings experience from the BMDV projects Mobility Digital Hochfranken, AktMel and the Shuttle Model Region Upper Franconia Phase I and Phase II projects to the project. This project builds directly on the results of MobiDig and uses the server and software of the data lake that was created in this project.
About the mFUND funding program of the BMDV
As part of the mFUND funding program, the BMDV has been supporting research and development projects relating to data-based digital innovations for the mobility of the future since 2016.
