Bioplastics, Part Four: How the university is rethinking bio-based plastics

The Institute for Circular Economy at Bio:Polymere (ibp) at Hof University of Applied Sciences held its fourth symposium on February 24 and 25 under the motto “Bioplastics – Approaches for Sustainable Product Development.” With this online conference, the institute continued its successful series of events and once again underscored the growing importance of bio-based and biodegradable plastics for a sustainable industry and a functioning circular economy.

The two-day online conference focused on current developments along the entire value chain of bioplastics – from raw materials to material development and processing to product design, application, and end-of-life strategies. The latest research results and practical solutions from industrial implementation were presented. The aim was to highlight innovative approaches to sustainable product development and to further intensify the dialogue between science, industry, and young researchers.

100 participants in intensive exchange

Around 100 participants from universities, research institutions, companies, and other organizations took advantage of the opportunity to exchange ideas and network. Free participation enabled company employees and scientists to actively contribute and gain insights into current research and development projects.

Specialized lectures and scientific sessions with depth

The varied program included four specialist presentations by renowned experts who highlighted strategic perspectives on sustainable product development. These were supplemented by 16 scientific contributions in four thematically grouped sessions. The focus was on innovative material concepts, new processing and compounding technologies, questions of recyclability and recycling, and application-oriented product developments.

Young researchers in the spotlight: the poster session

A particular highlight was the poster session with a total of ten contributions. Young scientists in particular presented their current research work here. The digital format enabled intensive discussions in small groups and specifically promoted the initiation of new collaborations.

Controversial debates and holistic thinking

The discussion rounds following the presentations were lively. They provided space for in-depth questions, different points of view, and constructive debates about the challenges and potential of sustainable plastics. It became clear that sustainable products can only be created through holistic thinking in cycles—from the design phase to recycling.

Award for excellent research

Liu Hang from Aalen University received a special honor. She was awarded for the best presentation on the topic of “Micro-Embossing of Biopolymer Blends to Control Biodegradability.” Her presentation impressed with its scientific quality, practical relevance, and clarity. The award also recognizes the high standard of all the entries submitted and the commitment of young scientists in the field of sustainable polymer materials.

Strong signal for innovation and responsibility

Thanks to careful planning and the dedicated support of the entire ibp team, the fourth symposium ran almost smoothly. The event impressively demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and continuous knowledge transfer in advancing sustainable solutions in the plastics sector.

With the fourth symposium, ibp once again sent a strong signal for innovation, responsibility, and future orientation. The positive response is already motivating us to continue the successful format in spring 2028.
