The EnerNET project is managed by the Institute for Hydrogen and Energy Technology at Hof University of Applied Sciences (iwe) and consists of three individual networks: local and district heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology and energy management. It offers specialists from these areas various free further training courses and the opportunity to network. EnerNET is supported by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF ) and the Upper Franconia Foundation.
In February, the project hosted a workshop at the Coburg waste-to-energy plant. The speakers were Matthias Kreuzer from iwe, Dr. Martin Schichtel from Kraftblock GmbH and Harald Ley from Green Innovations GmbH. The hybrid workshop with more than 30 participants focused on the identification and use of waste heat potential and the interaction between process heat and local or district heating.
The presentations were followed by a tour of the Coburg waste-to-energy plant. Plant manager Dipl.-Ing. Peter Baj provided information about the waste’s journey from delivery to heat and power generation.
Two thirds of the energy recovered from waste incineration is used for district heating in the city of Coburg. As this is unavoidable waste heat, the CO2 equivalent is 0. The waste – for certain types of waste, such as PFAS, there are currently no alternatives to incineration – is transported to the combined heat and power plant by rail from neighboring districts in a climate-friendly manner. Even ash and slag are largely fed back into the material cycle.
The requirements for emission limits are constantly increasing, which is why cleaner air is now emitted from the power plant than is drawn in from the surrounding air.
