Starting signal for two new trainees at Hof University of Applied Sciences: Julia Köchert and Finn-Oliver Scheibe were warmly welcomed by the Chancellor, HR department and their training managers Kerstin Simanski and Monika Motaczyńska. At the university, the two can expect to gain insights into many exciting areas. For their part, the young talents also bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to enrich the university and their new teams.
Over the next three years, Julia Köchert will be training to become a media and information services specialist (FaMI) specializing in libraries. At the same time, Finn-Oliver Scheibe wants to become an IT specialist specializing in system integration and is therefore starting his training in the university’s IT department.
Diverse experiences await
An apprenticeship at Hof University of Applied Sciences also offers the opportunity to gain insights into many other areas, be it degree courses, research projects or courses on a wide range of topics.
Hof University of Applied Sciences sees it as its responsibility to offer young people the chance of a sound and comprehensive education and thus pave the way for a successful future.”
University Chancellor Ute Coenen
This can later be used as a springboard for many things – be it for a degree course, employment, starting a business or even a combination of all of these. “The paths are open to you with a successfully completed apprenticeship!” She can report from her own experience that vocational training is an excellent way to start a career.
An apprenticeship as a specialist in media and information services specializing in libraries offers a wide range of future-oriented opportunities in a university library. The tasks are particularly varied, as you are involved in the provision of digital resources as well as the organization and maintenance of print media.”
Kerstin Simanski
FaMIs provide support with research inquiries, conduct information literacy training and are the direct point of contact for information and lending.
Due to the dynamic development of new technologies and the increasing importance of digital media, working in a university library offers an exciting and innovative working environment. The team is now looking forward to welcoming its 5th trainee.
“The advancing development in the field of AI systems often raises the question of which professions are still relevant in today’s world. You often hear in the media that “AI” can now also program,” says Monika Motaczyńska, who is supervising Finn-Oliver Scheibe during his training in the IT department. However, training in an IT profession covers many other areas than just programming.
What a trainee IT specialist for system integration learns above all is to understand the connections between the various IT systems, and an AI cannot yet “understand”. I believe that the future lies in developing human strengths such as creativity, independence and critical thinking. This is part of the program at an educational institution, but also for our trainees.”

Help with the start
In addition, trainees generally find their way around their new role quickly: “Thanks to the support of the trainers, jumping in at the deep end is not as bad as you might initially fear. In addition to the technical issues, the team spirit in the workplace and in the department plays a major role; everyone – including the trainee – is important and bears responsibility, and the others rely on them. I find that very motivating,” says Chancellor Ute Coenen.
Thanks to the trainers
In this context, she also expressly thanked the two trainers who are now responsible and their colleagues who are also involved. Without their support and assistance, it would not be possible to impart the necessary knowledge and professional skills to the trainees and thus guarantee the required quality of training.
Looking forward to the apprenticeship
Julia Köchert was able to gain her first insights into the university library during her school days at the FOS Hof and is looking forward to spending the next three years learning at the university.
I’ve always found the way books are sorted and stored very interesting and complex. In the end, I decided to train at Hof University of Applied Sciences, not only because the library offers a great atmosphere and warmly welcomes students and guests, but also because the work and handling of media is important and varied in times of digitalization.”

Finn-Oliver Scheibe is also looking forward to the start of his apprenticeship:
I decided to train at Hof University of Applied Sciences because the atmosphere here is calm and pleasant. I have always had a great interest in technology. I’m hoping for an instructive and fun 3-year apprenticeship.”
Finn-Oliver Scheibe
Hof University of Applied Sciences wishes Julia Köchert and Finn-Oliver Scheibe much success and enjoyment in their training.
