On January 29, 2025 at 7:15 pm, Hof University of Applied Sciences invites you to the second New Year’s Lecture in its history in its Audimax (Alfons-Goppel-Platz 1, Room B023). This time, the event is all about Hollywood and the future of artificial intelligence (AI). Under the tongue-in-cheek title “Sherlock Holmes, Watson or Sauron – how does Hollywood see the role of AI in the future”, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Valentin Plenk, Vice President for Research and Development, will present a special journey through the world of science fiction. Admission is free.
The lecture offers far more than just popcorn-worthy entertainment: using selected film examples, Prof. Plenk humorously traces the visions and scenarios that Hollywood has had and continues to have in store for artificial intelligence – from dystopian threats to positive utopias. In doing so, he emphasizes:
“Fiction is usually much more concerned with the handling of technology than with the technology itself.”
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Valentin Plenk
Science fiction films have always combined scientific ideas with the authors’ imagination. But what do they tell us about the influence of AI? And how can we deal with these technical visions? The audience can look forward to a humorous assessment of the consequences of technology, which sometimes also makes us think.
So if you want to start the new year with an entertaining look at the visions of Hollywood’s dream world, you shouldn’t miss the New Year’s lecture at Hof University of Applied Sciences.
