Last city lecture this summer
The Maker Movement is a fascinating movement that focuses on creativity, knowledge sharing, collaborative learning and the joy of DIY. But what exactly makes makerspaces, fablabs and repair cafés so special, and how do they help to make our world more sustainable and innovative?

The lecture as part of the Hof City Lectures provides exciting insights into the diverse world of makers – from working in high-tech laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment to self-realization in DIY and repair cafés. Here, defective devices are repaired in order to conserve resources and promote sustainability. It becomes clear just how different these places can be: They can be found worldwide at schools and universities, in companies or public libraries, they can pursue commercial goals or be non-profit oriented.

The contribution by the two professors from Hof University of Applied Sciences, Oliver Mauroner and Anke Müller, shows how these places not only promote innovation and problem-solving for many everyday challenges, but also strengthen social exchange and sustainable thinking. Experience how these creative places are changing our world – from sustainable, community-oriented action to the promotion of new ideas and social communities.
University comes back to the city
Hof University of Applied Sciences is tasked with having an impact on society as part of its “third mission”. This third pillar stands directly alongside the other two, namely teaching and research. “Especially in today’s increasingly flattened and brutalized public debate, we as a university want to bring complex and reflective thoughts back to the citizenry,” says Prof. Dr. Valentin Plenk, Vice President for Research and Development. The aim is to show that serious, scientific discourse does not necessarily have to be boring and incomprehensible. The three series of City Lectures have shown that this is indeed possible, says Plenk. The next round of City Lectures is expected to take place in Selb in the fall.
Hof University of Applied Sciences cordially invites you to the next free “City Lecture” on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 from 17:30-19:00. The event is explicitly aimed at the citizens of the city of Hof and the surrounding districts. The venue is the student café “Zur Auszeit” in Hof’s pedestrian zone.
A maximum of 60 people can take part; the order of registration applies. The event is free of charge, drinks and snacks are self-pay.
