A packed Audimax and an eager audience awaited Marcus Görner, engineer and future thinker, on October 23, 2024 for his lecture “The Fusion of Creativity and Technology – AI as a Partner in the Design Process”. Organized by the Bachelor’s degree course in Design & Mobility, the evening was dedicated to the presentation of modern AI tools in design and engineering – a topic that is becoming increasingly important in the industry.
Görner showed how AI as a partner in the work process not only enables more efficient work processes, but also new creative possibilities. With an appeal for an open attitude towards this technology, he emphasized:
‘We don’t have to ask ourselves whether AI will replace us. Rather, who will replace us, who will use AI?”
Görner spoke out in favor of viewing the use of AI as an opportunity to take design and engineering processes to a new level.
In an increasingly dynamic, globalized competitive situation, Görner emphasized how important it is not only to accept change, but to embrace it proactively. “Attitude: accepting change and learning to deal with constant change,” he explained, making it clear that adaptability is crucial to remaining successful in the global market.
With these insights, Görner challenged the audience to reflect on the role of AI both critically and constructively and to use its potential responsibly.
Many thanks to Marcus Görner, Prof. Dr. Anke Müller, Prof. Lutz Fügener and Prof. Alexander Forst for organizing and inspiring this evening.
Background information
Some key questions that arose before the lecture:
- How does AI influence design and the design process?
- To what extent is AI changing the way designers work and their areas of responsibility?
- What new opportunities arise from the use of AI-supported design tools?
- How can these tools be optimally integrated into the creative process?
- Does AI give rise to completely new design methods and processes?
Topic of the lecture:
- Marcus Görner shed light on the fusion of creativity and technology, with a focus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the design process
- We live in a time often referred to as the “age of AI” and this technological advancement has far-reaching implications for many industries, especially design
- According to recent studies, the use of AI will automate and change many work processes, bringing with it both opportunities and challenges
- For designers, this means that AI tools will be increasingly integrated into their work processes and open up new possibilities
Reference to the Master’s degree course Artificial Intelligence Aided Mobility Design, which starts in Selb in the winter semester 2025/26:
The Master’s degree course in Artificial Intelligence Aided Mobility Design operates at the interface between technology and design, just like Marcus Görner’s topic. AI is not only changing industrial design processes, but also requires an adaptation of university education.
As part of the newly launched degree course, AI is used as a valuable tool for experimental research and design.
With the help of AI tools, students acquire important skills that enable them to accelerate extensive and labor-intensive design processes (e.g. variant creation, proportion design, impact assessments) in a short space of time.
Students act both as users and designers of these innovative working methods.
