“Sustainability in focus: products made from bioplastics or recycled plastics?”

Bioplastics, made from renewable raw materials such as corn or sugar cane, promise a greener future as they conserve fossil resources and are partly biodegradable. But are they really the best solution? The third and final City Lecture in Selb explores this question under the title: “Sustainability in focus: products made from bioplastics or recycled plastics?”. In fact, the question is often at the center of many environmental discussions. Prof. Dr. Michael Nase, Head of the Institute for the Circular Economy of Biopolymers (ibp), explains the current state of affairs.

Which plastics does the future belong to? This is the question posed by the third city lecture at Hof University of Applied Sciences in Selb; Image: adobestock;

“Recycled plastics show a different way: they use existing plastics and transform waste into new products,” says Professor Michael Nase from Hof University of Applied Sciences. In this way, they reduce the mountains of waste and lower the need for new raw materials. Both materials offer exciting approaches that can reduce our environmental impact. But which solution is more sustainable? The answer depends on many factors – from the area of application to the recyclability of the materials.

“The future will show whether we should focus more on bio-based or recycled plastics – perhaps the real solution lies in a clever combination of both approaches.”

Hof University of Applied Sciences wants to appeal to the public

“We are delighted that the city lecture has also been well received in Selb. The local population is also very interested here,” says Professor Valentin Plenk, who is responsible for the event as Vice President of Research and Development:

We notice that society’s interest in scientific topics is growing, it is important that our speakers present the topics well, but this actually works very well.”

It is important to register as early as possible, as places fill up quickly. With this event, Hof University of Applied Sciences shows that a serious, scientific discourse does not necessarily have to be boring and incomprehensible.

City lecture in Selb for everyone

“We cordially invite the citizens of Selb and the surrounding districts,” says Professor Valentin Plenk, Vice President for Research at Hof University of Applied Sciences, and continues: “The City Lecture is our way of stimulating a fact-based discussion with society.”

The venue is the Spektrum in Selb, Poststrasse 5, which, following extensive renovation work, is now a modern cultural venue for a wide variety of events. Ulrich Pötzsch, Lord Mayor of Selb, is also very pleased with the series:

We are very pleased with Hof University’s contribution to the Selb Cultural Center”.
