EnerNet workshop: Sorption cooling in the focus of sustainable cooling

On October 22, 2025, the EnerNET event series at Hof University of Applied Sciences continued its series of innovative specialist workshops – this time on the topic of sorption refrigeration technology. The focus was on the question of how adsorption and absorption processes can be used for environmentally friendly cooling. Sorption refrigeration technology makes it possible to incorporate previously unused heat sources, thereby increasing energy efficiency and reducing the load on electricity grids, as it only requires a fraction of the electrical energy required by conventional compression refrigeration systems.

A special highlight was the presentation of the mobile training room “SorptionTakeOff” trailer from the Green Chiller Association. This unique trailer contains a complete water/lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system and serves as a learning and demonstration platform for the technology. Participants were able to experience live how the theory and practice of sorption cooling intertwine.

Christian Kemmerzehl (Managing Director of WEKRA and EAW) and Dr.-Ing. Manuel Riepl (ZAE Bayern, Group Manager Heat Transformation), who were both significantly involved in the development and implementation of the trailer, hosted the event. In addition, a lecture for students was held at Hof University of Applied Sciences, followed by a course at the Kulmbach Refrigeration College the following day. The successful conclusion of the workshop day was a network meeting with a lively professional exchange over dinner.

Invitation to the EnerNet final meeting

The final network meeting of the EnerNET project will take place on November 26, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the university campus in Hof. Not only will there be a review of the project phase – the continuation and new perspectives of the network will also be presented. Participants can also look forward to exciting presentations on carbon pricing, its impact on German companies and a current outlook on climate policy and future regulations.

Another highlight is the guided tour of the new ZWE Institute building, which will be occupied in 2026. Of course, there will also be plenty of time for discussions and networking over food and drink. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required at
