Once again, Hof University of Applied Sciences is delighted to receive a generous donation from VR Bank Bayreuth-Hof eG: as in previous years, the regional bank presented the educational institution with a symbolic donation cheque for 5,000 euros. This time, the amount will be used to purchase a so-called “Crockmeter” – a device that measures the color fastness of materials and thus provides important findings for sustainable product development.
“The Crockmeter tests the extent to which color is transferred from one material to another surface when rubbed – for example, whether a red sweater rubs off on a white leather seat. Both dry and wet rubbing fastness are assessed,” says Prof. Dr. Michael Rauch, describing the purpose of the device.
“The device is a clear example of how sustainability requirements such as the durability and longevity of textiles can be tested in a practical way,” explains Prof. Dr. Anett Matthäi, who suggested the purchase of such a device. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Anke Müller, adds: “We will not only use the Crockmeter in teaching, but also in particular at school events such as Girls’/Boys’ Day or school projects to get young people interested in the implementation of sustainability and the practical testing of dyed materials.”
As the device is compact and portable, it can easily be taken to external events. This makes sustainability research literally tangible.
Promoting regional science
When handing over the donation, Bernd Schnabel, member of the Board of Management of VR Bank Bayreuth-Hof eG, emphasized the importance of the collaboration with the university: “Sustainability is created where knowledge, research and practice come together. We are very happy to support Hof University of Applied Sciences in passing on this knowledge – especially to young people in our region.”
