On November 26, 2024, the third and final city lecture of Hof University of Applied Sciences took place at the Selb learning location. Under the title “Sustainability in Focus”, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Nase and Prof. Dr. Thomas Meins from the Institute for Bio:polymers spoke about current developments in the plastics industry. The event offered a comprehensive insight into the challenges and opportunities of sustainable plastics production and recycling.
The experts highlighted various aspects of sustainable plastics production: the production of plastics from renewable raw materials, the production of compostable plastics and their recycling options. Professor Nase focused on short-life plastic products, while Professor Meins contributed the perspective of manufacturers of long-life plastics, such as those used in the automotive industry.
The triumph of plastic began because we can transport granulate so easily. Plastic is not going to go away, but we can make all products more durable, lighter and more homogeneous.”
Prof. Dr. Thomas Meins
Approaches for more sustainability and practical tips for consumers
The speakers discussed possible sustainable concepts, such as a deposit system for shampoo bottles, an optimized structure of food packaging for better separability and solutions for compostable plastics in the waste system through cooperation with composting plants.
Finally, there are tips for consumers, such as paying attention to the DIN 13432 standard when buying “organic” plastic and that clear plastic is easier to recycle than colored plastic.
“We recommend bioplastics for short-life products and conventional plastics and recycling for medium and long-life products.”
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Nase
The 35 guests present took an active part in the discussion. Topics included packaging laws, consumer behavior and common recycling myths. The CO2 consumption of packaging compared to foodstuffs that used to spoil more quickly was also discussed.
The Institute for Bio:Polymers at Hof University of Applied Sciences evaluates and develops plastics and their processing and recycling throughout their life cycle.
Future events
The city lecture series is to be continued in 2025.
“The idea behind the City Lecture is to reduce the barrier to coming to the university. That’s why the lecture takes place in the city. Our colleagues talk in the city about the topics that are close to their hearts. The event is open to anyone who is interested.”
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Valentin Plenk, Vice President Research and Development
