The Intelligent and Learning Systems research group at the Institute for Information Systems (iisys) at Hof University of Applied Sciences has developed an innovative and AI-supported fitness tool together with the “Freiraum” fitness studio in Bayreuth. The “Fit Me” sub-project was developed as part of the European Union-funded ERDF project M4-SKI and is now being made available to the general public.

The project, which ran for seven months last year, enables sports enthusiasts to visualize their individual fitness goals using artificial intelligence.
Using a demonstrator, users can upload a photo of themselves, select the desired training type and intensity and receive an AI-generated preview of their future, fitter self – in other words, they can take a look into the future.”

The training plan generated can then be discussed with the trainers at the cooperating fitness studio and individually adapted.
Technological innovation for more motivation
Many people find it difficult to stay motivated to exercise in the long term. This is exactly where the demonstrator comes in: Realistic AI-supported image manipulation creates a tangible idea of one’s own training goal. The software is based on state-of-the-art image recognition and neural networks, which have been fine-tuned to meet the requirements. “The challenge was to ensure the realism of the images generated, as many pre-trained diffusion algorithms tend to produce exaggerated or unrealistic representations,” says project team member Jonas Kemnitzer. The individual relationship between the image and the training plan was also specifically optimized.

Difference to conventional applications
In contrast to conventional cell phone filters, which usually only make superficial changes, the AI of “Fit Me” specifically analyzes body structures and adapts them on the basis of scientifically sound training processes. In addition, the system processes the data exclusively on the servers of the AI user center without storing any personal information. Users can therefore be sure that their data will not be used or stored.
Ready for use
After an intensive development and test phase, the demonstrator is now officially activated and can be used online by all interested parties. Access is via the “Freiraum” fitness studio at Spinnereistraße 7, 95445 Bayreuth, under the direction of Managing Director Max Mühlbauer.
The project is part of the EU-funded M4-SKI project and was realized with the support of the European Union.
